The ONA secured County funding and land use approval for a new Oceanside Beach Wayside access path that was designed and ready to build in late 2018. The night before construction was to start, we were advised that (despite previous assurances) state park officials had not obtained necessary approval from local Native American tribal representatives. When consulted, those tribal authorities vetoed the project because it entailed excavation of undisturbed beachfront soil where tribal remains may be located. The ONA and the County then commissioned a new design that limits excavation to the previously excavated and paved parking lot area. In early December, all interested parties are scheduled to meet with tribal officials in hopes of obtaining approval for the new design.
